AN ELECTRIC LIGHT WITHOUT MOTIVE POWER.

At a recent meeting of tho directors of the London and Son'll Western Railway Company, Mr Gammon, of 31 Nicholas Lane, introduced to them a m>W electric lieht, patented as “ Ohccßcwright’s Railway Electric Light.” Ihe idea is, ns the name suggests, that it should be used more particularly for lighting railway carriages ; but, in consequence of its extreme simplicity and cheapness of production, it is adapted for honsehol 1 ' purposes also. No. motive . power i- s required, the light being produc'd from a - primary battery charged witchemicals. Incandescent burners : are rised, and is is estimated that the cost of battery, lights, &c.-, will not exceed £loor £ 12. Tills.will vitto&l|j.Waho w^hdte, aß.all that.will afterward« be required will be for the battery to be qlcnnsed and Jlhc chemicals renewed, the same as is now done with telegraph batteries. The Sonth-Western directors asked Mr Gammon to fit up a carriage in a train to Basingstoke, and two of the directors, Mr Wyndham Portal (deputychairman) and Mr W. B. -Beach» travelled with Mr Gammon in the train. The light burned admirably the whole, journey, and answered every expectation, being turned higher or lower ns required, by menus of a lever which is fixed at the end of the battery. On arrival at Basingstoke the battery and apparatus were removed n tid refixed in a carriage of an up train, the shifting occupying about ten minutes, nnd_jipon reaching Waterloo the light was still burning «s brilliantly os at tho commencement of the journey
