PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The admission of the Headmaster that the “ fact of there being any prizes at all was owing to the energy of the assistant mistress,” is only an acknowledgement of what must be apparent to anyone who takes an interest in the school. I presume it was not intended as a confession of want of energy in those above. The .exhibition of the pupils’ attainments at the entertainment given in aid of the prizes was a proof that this can not be. May I ask if in the assorting of the prizes the Headmaster and second master also took a back seat, reserving their latent energies and according to the assistant mistress the premier position which her energy entitles her to ? Because it appears to me that the value of the books given as prizes is not concordant with the standards, or even in keeping within the standards. For instance, the 3rd prize in the Ist standard is priced 4s 6d, whereas the Ist prize in the 3rd standard is priced 3s 6d, and I believe the 2nd prize in the 3rd standard is a higher priced hook
than the Ist prize in the same class. Possibly the bookseller is nojndge of valne, and everything may bo satisfactory. I trust so, for nothing is dearer to children than fair play and no favouritism, —Yonrs, &0., Jobs Gibsok.
