MISSING MONEY.
Extraordinary Loss of dSXSST'. On Saturday night Mr O’Shannnssy, of. Kakaramea, reported to the police that he had lost a large sum of money in the np train from Wanganui. It appears that Mr O’JBljannnssy had gone down to Wanganui for the purpose of receiving the amount of insurance on his house at Kakararaea, which was recently burnt down. This sura, £127, Mr Notman paid by cheque to Mr O’Shannassy, who put the cheque, together with a one-pound note, into a pocket handkerchief, which he placed in the breast pocket of his coat. On his way home to Patea, Mr O’Shannassy, it seems, went to sleep on the seat of the railway carriage, and it is not known whether the money was taken out of his pocket while in that state, or whether it dropped out, and Mr O’Shannassy, who was confused by his loss, could not make a coherent statement. The cheque, it is believed, was a crossed one, but the police have taken all the precautions in their power to recover the missing money.
