It has transpired that communications have recently, passed between the Gorman and English Governments regarding the state of affairs in China, and that arrangements have now been made for co-operation in taking such action as may deemed necessary for protection of the British and German residents in Chinese territory. Arrived at Plymouth to-day, P. and O. steamship Clyde from Melbourne, Oct. 11 ; and Orient steamship Lusitania from Melbourne, Oct. 20, with a cargo of 4500 carcases of mutton on board. Doc. 4. In its issno this morning, the Daily I'elegraph in refening to the Intercolonial Conference now sitting at Sydney, hails with acclamation the union of the: Australasian Colonies, and wishes God speed to their proposed federation. It is reported that Mr Tennyson, the Poet Laureate will shortly be raised to the Peerage. CALCUTTA, Dec 2. The Earl of Ripon, Governor-General of India, returned to Calcutta to-day. His Excellency was received by the natives with cheering, bnt hooted by the Europeans who were present at his arrival. ST PETRSBURG, Dec 2. The issue of a new loan of 56,000,000 roubles (about £7,150,000 sterling) is announced by the Government.

SYDNEY, Dec 4.

It is confidently expected that the labours of the convention will be attended with- unqualified success. It Is probable that the session will close oh Friday next. The committee appointed has prepared the draft of the Imperial" Bill defining the constitution and functions of the proposed Federal Council. It is understood that complete unanimity prevails thereon among the delegates to the convention.
