./ i <i ir.i; '-.u: The refrigerating machinery ordered from England some months ago by the Gear Meat Preserving and Freezing Company arrived tyy the s.s. lonic, and is now beihg discharged at Wellington, from which jt will shortly be taken and placed in position on |theVhnlk Jubilee, whicii was pnrehased in Sydney a short, time since for that purpose. The machinery is from tho foundry of Haslam and Co., the principal makers of that class of work in the United Kingdom, and is similar in principle to the apparatns. which is being fitted on the steamers belonging to the New Zealand Shipping Company. It is capable of freezing from 8000 to 10,000. carcases Demotion. The capacity of the hnlkis about 14,000, and in order to utilise the whole accomodation extra machinery
will probably bo onion'd from England at an early date. The Jubilee is now being insulated with charcoal, ami as soon as this work is completed she will be taken round to the Patent Slip for the purpose of rewiring « thorough .overhaul. No time whatever will be lost in placing the machinery in situ, and the directors of the . company are confident lhat’in about a month's time freezing operations will be commenced. . A substantial wharf is in course of construction at Petone, and a line of tramway has been laid , down -so as: to: connect the pier .with the company’s abatoirs, thereby enabling the carcases which are to be frozen to be placed in _ the chambers with the least possible amount of handling. The first batch of meat which will be prepared for the Home market will be on the company’s account, but arrangements have been made for freezing foi 1 private parties, and il is believed that advantage of such, an opportunity will be taken by a largo number of graziers in the bht-dislricts.
