A NATIVE LAND SCANDAL.
The Cambridge correspondent of the Auckland Star writes: A somewhat sensational story is now going the rounds of the knowing ones in native lands transactions, which, if authentic, shows pretty conclusively that Mr Bryce’s Land Act last session has not been so instrumental in preventing frauds as was thought likely. The story runs that a block of land outside the Thermal Springs boundary f5,000 acres) having been adjudicated to the whole tribe of Ngatctnra at Rotorua, by the Court, was finally vested in the name of a certain half-caste’s wife, Her husband (Haknria) acted as agent to Buller and Jackson during the Cambridge Court. It appears, at the close of the Court, that Haknria entered the Court and had his wife’s narh: inserted as solo owner, with the understanding that she was to distribute the purchase money among the others. The purchase money of the block amounted to about £2,000. Of tins sum the natives said they only received £4OO, the balance having, it seems, taken wings to Wellington. Surely this matter, if true, would bear investigation by'the Frauds Commissioner.
