His Worship the Mayor lias received a circular from a firm in Berlin asking his assistance towards circulating some new cards done by the chromo-lithography process, specimens of which were enclosed with the circular. Those consist of five pictures of members of.the English Royal Family, and considering the price asked they are perfect marvels. One feature mentioned in the circular is that 20 per cent, of any orders may bo retained for charitable purposes, and it is not unlikely that the Mayor may sec if n little for the Hospital cannot bo raised in that way. Mr Adams will be pleased to show tho specimens and lake orders, which should bo plentiful enough when we mention that the average price of a collection of crowned heads” is a little over a penny each. Mr R A Adams, (ho present Mayor, is not likt-ty to be opposed for the forthcoming Mayoralty. ■Messrs Stanley and Darbysliire’s Juvenile Opera Bouffe Company opened their season of two nights in Pa!ca on Wednesday last, in the Harmonic Hall. The house was well filled, arid the manner of rendering the Opera provided for the occasion, Les Cloches de Corneville has certainly never been surpassed by any Company that has visited Patca, The appreciation of their several parts by the juveniles, and their faithful rendition of the same, retlccts the highest credit upon their teachers. It needs but little to sec that many of the children with care will develop into first class ' actors ami actresses. In Cos Cloches the part of the Marquis was sustained by Miss Amy Childs with spirit throughout. The characters of Scrpolcttc and Germaine were assumed by Alisa Flora Graupner and Miss Amelia Hodge respectively. Master G Favargcr as the Bailie and Miss Dolly Inman as his shadow, Gobo, quite hit the popular taste and evoked roars of laughter. Master Willie Driscoll s assumption of the role of Gaspard the miser would be hard to be beaten, and the way in which Gaspard’s avariciousness was depicted was life-like hr the extreme. All the other characters, though minor, were well sustained, and the choruses were given with such precision as to show that neither time nor trouble had been spared in the musical education of the children. The “ Pirates of Penzance ” formed the bill of fare for last evening, when a fairly large audience was present, and as on the previous evening, the faithful representations of the characters were noticeable, and the applause during the progress of the Opera was loud and frequent. The orchestra under the leadership of Hen Braun rendered material assistance both evenings to the success of the entertainment. Timothy Shields of Baltimore, is the colored giant of America. He stands six feet eight inches in his stockings, and weighs 220 pounds. The following gentlemen are to be appointed official assignees in bankruptcy: —For Auckland, Mr Lawson, for some time commissioner for the JN*oiih Inland railways ; for Wellington, Mr. Graham, at present Town Clerk ; for Christchurch, Mr. Latter, a well-known resident ; for Dunedin, Mr Ashcroft, until recently editor of the Otago Daily Timeu The districts over which each of the official assignees will administer, is the same as the Supremo Court Districts. The Wellington Horticultural Society’s Show which took place yesterday was a great success.
The New Zealand Shipping Company have received a cable that (ho Fcnslanton readied Ilio Janeiro on the 9th inst. The refrigerator was working satisfactorily and the cargo of frozen meat was in good condition.

A meeting of the National Insurance Company was held in Dunedin on Wednesday. The chairman said the year’s work was a very successful one, tho tinderwriting for tho year showing a loss of £II,OOO. A consignment of frozen fish limn New Zealand was sold retail in (ho Central Fish Market, London, on September ‘2O. The kinds were piincipnlly sen flounder and mullet. Tho greater proportion of the bulk was in splendid condition. Owing to want of knowledge of tho conditions necessary to bo observed in packing fish for a journey round three parts of the world, a few of the outside fish in the boxes wore a lilllo gone off, though not ''enough to render them unsaleable ; but whole consignment came to hand in il.etter condition than many parcels of fish which had oniy travelled from English ports. Partly, perhaps, from the novelty, there was a brisk demand, several old colonists being present, many of whom expressed surprise at tho life-like appearance of the fish. Good prices were rea. lised, the mullet fetching 8d and 9d each, and tiie experiment may be pronounced an undoubted success,
