The Patea Musical and Dramatic Society gave their entertainment in aid of the Patea Rifles fund on Thursday evening to a very small .house. The entertainment opened with the comic drama “ A Race for a Dinner.” Mr Kearney, who assumed the character of Sponge, filled it well* his get up being exceedingly good, and his acting of a free and easy style which it would be well for some of the other members of the Society to emulate. Mr Heron as Mr Doric depicted that character well, as did also Mr Chadwick that of Mr Measnrton. The Patea Rifles Band gave some selections in the course of the evening. The song “ Last Rose of Summer ” by Mr Heron was well appreciated and Mr Taplin who

sang “ Nil Desperandam ” wag loudly applauded. Two other songs were to have been given bat through unforeseen circumstances had to left out of programme. A step dance was however, added, and was executed with such skill that a redemand had to bo complied with. The entertainment was brought to a close by the farce, “ In search of a Confederate,” in which the characters were well sustained tbronghouL
