The ,annual spring meeting of the Waverley and Waitptara Racing Club was held on the course, Waverley, on Friday. Following is a list of events: 'Waverley and ’ WaixotaeA Guineas of 105 sovs, with a sweep of three guineas at the post for starters, to go to second horse ; Tg- miles; colts, Bst 1 Olb; fillies and geldings, Bst 51b; acceptance, 4 sovs, on date of general entry. Closed with 11 nominations. S. Powell’s Leonessa, 1
Won by half a length. Mr J. Stevens’ Wairuareka also started. The race was a good one, hut Leonessa got the best of the start, and Wairuareka never caught her. Totalisator, £29.
Handicap Hurdles Rage, of 60 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs out of stakes; 2k miles; over 9 flights of hurdles, 3ft. 9in. in height; top weight not to exceed 12 stone, lowest not under 9 stone; nomination 2 sovs ; acceptance 2 sovs. Mr A J Keith’s Bugler, 9st 4lbs 1 Mr J E Nugent’s Chevalier, (9st 4lbs) also started. Bugler got away first and maintained the lead until the second round when Chevalier came up and * looked like winning," but Bugler soon again drew away and gradually increased his lead. Wpn by about 4 lengths; Time smin. 24f sec. £2B in the totalizator.
Hack Hurdle Race, of 10 sovs; once round and a distance; post entry; entrance 1 sov; weight not to be under 10 stone; open to all horses that have never won public money, or been nominated for an advertised : race six months previous to date of meeting ; hack races excepted. Time 3mins. SJsecs. Qang-a-wa and Home Rule also started. The horses kept in a cluster for the first half mile, hut then Patupaiarchi, Waitangi, and Ruarua crept away. The others were nowhese. Plying Handicap of 50 sovs; i mile; ' -top weight not to exceed 10 stone; nomination 1 sov; acceptance 2 sovs. Mr A Standish’s gm Witiora 6st 12lbs 1 Mr S Powell’s b m Hinemoa Bst 2 Mr W Wilson’s br m Sweet Home 6st 71bs 3 Time Imin. 20£secs. Mr D. Scott’s Notice of Motion 1 Mr A. J. Keith.’s Jack 2 Mr. Whishaw’s Daphne 3 Time, 2min. 21|secs. A protest was entered against Notice of Motion,as haying won the Ladies’ Bracelet in Napier, hut it was disallowed. Maiden Plate, of 40 sovs; H miles; weight for age; entrance, 3 sovs ; second horse to save stakes; open to all horses that have never won public money prior to date of entry; any horse entered for Maiden Plato winning an advertised race between the time of entry and date of race, to carry a penalty of 6lbs. Mr Scott’s be Ahua, 3 yrs, 7st 71bs 1 Mr S Powell’s ch f Leonessa, 2 | yrs, 7st 4lbs 2; Mr J Davidson’s g m Zem Zem, 5 yrs, 9st 2lbs 3 Time 2min. 54£secs. Only three started. Leonessa led till coming down the straight when she was overhauled by Ahua who won easily, Zem Zem some distance to the rear. £144 passed through the totalisator. Waverley and Waitotara Handicap; of 140 sovs; If miles; second horse to receive 20 sovs out of stakes; winner of any race of the value of 100 sovs after declaration of weights to carry a penalty of 7lbs; top weight not to exceed 10 stone; nomination 2 sovs; acceptance 3 sovs. Mr S. Powell’s b.h. Bayard, 4years, 7st 4lb 1 Mr A. Standish’s g.m. Witiora, 5 years, 7st 101b 2 Mr A. J. Keith’s Hippona, 4 years, 6st Hlb. 3 Hinemoa and Ngata also ran. Time Smins. 18£secs. Passing the stand Witiora was leading, the others all close up except Ngata who was some distance to the rear. When half way round, Bayard came up and when coming home passed Witiora, who, however, retained second place. Totalisator, £250, dividend £3. A Hack Race, catch weights, was won by Mr Whishaw’s Claude. For the Forced Handicap, Mr W. Wilson’s Sweet Home and Mr Davidson’s Zem Zem started. After a well contested race, Sweet Home came in a winner by a length.
