MELBOURNE, Oct 30. Heavy rains are seriously interfering with training. Commotion had a splendid gallop twice round the course this morning. Stockdale did useful work, and finished a mile fast. Signora and Cunnnmulla had a spin ronnd the coarse," the former finishing strong. Nicholas and Aide-de-camp were sent the Cup distance at three-quarter pace, the former coming home, well. Magnet had a splendid and finished the last mile in grand style in lmins6sec. Frying Pan was sent ronnd the course which he ' finished in 2min 58sccs. Sir Modred* the Gem, arid Sardins were sent a mile and a halfdogetlier, Sir Modred having the best of it and finished in 2min Sdsoc. Despot and Martini-Henry went together and wound up well and strong, the last mile being run in Imin. 54|secs. Dirk Hattornick finished the same distance in Imin. 55 secs. Archie and The Drummer went twice ronnd, splendidly. First Demon had a gallop ronnd the course, finishing in grand style.’ Betting quotations are unaltered. . The second forfeits for the Melbourne s Cnp were declared to-day. The followf ing horses accepted :—Aide de Camp, Anglesey, Archie, Besbos, Bordeaux, Calma, Claptrap, Commotion, Despot, Cunnaranlla, Dirk Hatteraiok, First Demon, Dukedom, First Water, Jessie, Kathleen Mavoureon, Kingsdale, Le Grand, Kohinoor, Lesbia, Linda, Magnet, Martini-Henry, Nicholas, Off Colour, Pollio, Recovery, Santa Clans, Sardine, Signor, Sir Modred, Stockwcll, Sweet William, The Gem, and Vcrnct. Tbirty-five horses now remain in. This Afternoon, Sir . Mod red’s lime of 2mins Sssecs should be for once ronnd the course, not a mile and a half. The betting market is qniet The latest quotations are-—for the Derby, Archie even money, Off Colonr has been backed at 3 to 1, but 4 to 1 is now wanted about him ; Martini-Henry 100 to 20 (off); Sardins, 7 to 1; Signor 100 to 8 (off). For the Cnp, Calma 7to 1. From 100 to 9 has been offered about First Demon, but 100 to 8 is taken. Aide, de Camp and Le Grand 100 to 6 (tkn); Despot and Nicholas 100 to 6 (‘>ff); Claptrap, Satdins, Pollio, Signor and First Water* }OO to 5 (tkn). The last two are backed fn thousands.
