ELECTRIC LIGHT ON N.Z. STEAMERS.

The London Standard of a recent date says —The largest contract for electric lighting up to the present time was on Saturday concluded in Glasgow between the owners of the New Zealand Shipping Company’sfleet the Edison Company’s branch in Scotland, under the management of Mr Charles T. Grant. Three fine steamers, two of which are sister ships to the s.s. Tongariro, launched on Thursday at Messrs John Elder and Go’s yard, are to be lighted throughout with the incandescent light, and fitted with a duplicate set of Edison’s marine dynamos and engines, one set being for reserve in cases of emergency., The Tongariro and the two sister ships now in: course of construction, are built of steel, and have cut-water stems, with figure-heads. They are to be barque-rigged, having masts ami yards of steel, with a large spread of canvas. Each vessel is divided into eight water-tight compartments. Five divisions are carried up between main and upper, decks, and fitted with water-tight fireproof doors.

By this arrangement the danger of fire spreading, should it break out in any yart of the ship, is obviated, and greater safety ensured by being able to isolate any one compartment in case of damage to the hull and the compartment being flooded.
