WAIROA LIGHT HORSE.

— ; [From our Correspondent.] ■ The annual ball given by the Wairoa Horse on Friday last at Wavorley{ came off most successfully in spite of the rough weather. Fears were expressed that tlie weather would prevent many from attending. The result showed, however, that wet weather could not damp the ardour of our gallant defenders and their numerous friends. It fact it was conceded on all sides that the ball on Friday last eclipsed all former ones. The arrangements were most complete and the niusic by Messrs Armstrong,. Hunter, and Sparks of Wanganui, was 7 everything’.that could be desired. The Alexandra Troop was well represented, lliolf pretty uniform making a pleasing contrast with the red coats of the local troop. Several lady visitors from Wanganui were also present. The officer commanding the district, Major Stapp, was unavoidably absent. Scrgt-Majors Gariy and Henry- were both present and evidently thoroughly enjoyed themselves, showing the} T were old veterans in the ball room as well as in the field. 5.30 a.in. brought the proceedings to a close, and the ball was soon emptied, the dancers having to face a wet morning for their, journey to their respective homes. Saturday was tin: last of tlie week’s drill, and was, as usual, wet. The troops, therefore, made use of the Town Hall for their exercise. Capt Walkinton may be congratulated’ on possessing so fine a troop, and certainly des<-rv< s thanks for the interest lie takes in volunteering matters. There were exceedingly few absentees during the week’s drill, the troops turning out almost to a man.
