A FARMER’S; enemy. TO THE EDITOR. Sill, —In your issue of the 17th inst., I notice an article, headed “A Farmer’s Enemy-.” It may be interesting to the local sheep owners to know that I have also noticed this season that the sea gulls have been destroying the lambs of the flock in ray charge, in exactly the manner described by Mr Mcßae, of Marlborough. The first instance . I noticed was in July last, when 1 found a strong lamb oFabout six weeks old dead, with its intestines protruding from.an opening in the flank. At first !■ concluded that the mischief was done by dogs, but on closer examination' I found that it must have been done by either hawksorsea gulls; of the latter there were always a.number about the paddocks. Since then, I have actually seen the gulls on the lambs that were still alive, but injured, past a chance of recovery and I had to destroy them. On one occasion I also saw a hawk rise off the ground and then drop on to the back of a lamb that was running past. The lamb rushed under its mother and thus forced the hawk off before it could do any injury.—Yours &C. . ’’ W. W. FULTON. Patea, Oct. 17.
