FATAL COLLIERY EXPLOSION.
The Rhondda Valley district was again the scene of a fatal colliery accident on Angust 21, when an explosion occurred at the Gelli pit, Ystrad, owned by Messrs Thomas and Griffiths. The accident happened when the day shift, numbering about four hundred hands, was at work, but the effects of the disaster were localised. Great consternation was caused in the pit, and it was eventually ascertained that twentyone men were at work with the steam coal in the heading when the gas was fired, and that all the men had been seriously injured. One man afterwards succumbed to his injuries. How the explosion occurred is not clearly known, although it is attributed by some to the workmen suddenly coming upon a blower in the workings where gas was
evolved. The news was soon noised about the valley, and the usual heartrending scones took place in the crowd as the men were brought up and identified by those who had seen them go down in safety only a short time before. There was a great amount of energy shown in rescuing the men who were affected by the shock, and little time was lost in all ending to their needs.
