A COMPLICATED AFFAIR.

The Hawera Star has the following: A peculiar affair cropped up at the R.M. Court this morning. It will be remembered that, Inst week, the case Qninlivan t Major resulted in a judgment for plaintiff for £lO odd, with costs; and from statements made in the court to-day, it seems that there was an unsatisfied judgment for about the same amount obtained by one Bryce, of Normanby, against Quinlivan. The morning after judgment was given against him, Major rode out to Bryce and purchased his judgment for £5. Armed with an order to receive the amount of Bryce’s judgment, Major paid in the amount of Quinlivan’s, but produced the order and impounded the money paid in. Quinlivan’s counsel, Mr Hutchison, found out what was going on, and he put in bis bill of costs ns a lien on the money, and there were a variety of moves and counter moves on the part of the respective parties, which need not be mentioned, as they did not affect the decision of the court. When the court met this morning the position was that the money was lying in the hands of the clerk, Major claiming it on the one hand, and Hutchison on the other. Mr Matthews, on behalf of Mr Major, applied that the money bo paid over in accordance with Bryce’s order. Mr Hutchison denounced the proceeding as a “ disreputable mean trick which any professional man shonld be ashamed to be associated with,” and a “ scene” appeared imminent. The two solicitors argued the technical points at length, and numerous complications appeared ; but eventually the Magistrate (Captain Wray) cut the knot by saying that the defendant’s proceeding seemed vindictive, and ordering that the amount of the judgment be paid to Quinlivan.
