SHOCKING SUICIDE.
(PER PP.ESS ASSOCIATION.) DUiNEDTN, This day. A most dcterrainen case of suicide occurred at Ma\aura. Peter Matheson, who lately had some connection with a lignite pit on the Waimea estate came to Gore oh Monday night, and took so much'drink that Constable Pratt had to find quarters for him in the lockup. He spent a restless night and next morning was brought before the R.M ~ fined 5s and set at liberty, still suffering from the effects of drink. He left in the Waimea train forborne and went to bed. About midnight his inateS, hearing a gurgling sound, entered Mathison’s apartment, arid found, the man lying with his throat cut. He held a razor tightly in one hand .with which he had inflicted a terrible wound from ear to ear from which he died in the course of a few moraeritSi , It is believed he had no friends in the district, also that' he came from Cariter-, bury. His appearance in the Court on -Tuesday was, as far as Ihe' poHce knew, his first-appearance, and the ; degradation seemed to have preyed on his mind..
