COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council mot on Wednesday. Present—the Chairman, Crs Bridge, Taylor, Morgan, Durie, O’Sullivan, and Wilson. DAMAGE TO ROAD. The clerk of the Pa tea West Road Board wrote drawing attention to the state of the Tamnaha road, which had been cut up by the carting of metal and requesting the Council to repair damages. Gr Morgan proposed, Cr O’Sullivan seconded “ That this Council vote a sum of £25 in conjunction with the Patea West Rond Board for the purpose of repairing that portion of the Taumaha road known ns Peacock’s cutting with the view of keeping it open for winter traffic. As an amendment Cr Wilson moved, “That the sum of £lO be granted to the Patea West Road Board towards the repair of the Taumaha road, provided the Road. Board expend a similar amount.” This was seconded by Cr Durie and carried. WAVEULEV POUND. Proposed by Cr Bridge, “ That Cr Taylor and the mover be deputed to examine the poundkeeper’s books at Waverlcy and report upon the same at next meeting.” Seconded by Cr Wilson and carried. CASE OF BENEVOLENCE.

The Secretary of the Wanganui Benevolent Society wrote, asking the Council to resume payment of a weekly allowance of 7s for Mrs Adams. It appeared that Mrs Adams had been sent from Waverley to Wanganui in the hope that medical skill would improve her health, the Council paying for her maintenance as above. The payments had ceased, hence the letter from the Wanganui society, in which it was stated that if the allowance were not paid again Mrs Adams would be returned to Waverley. Council passed the following resolution, “ That the Council regrets that it cannot vote any money towards the maintenance of Mrs Adams, having transferred the control of the Hospital.” CLAIM FOR EXPENSES. The Provincial District Auditor forwarded a claim (through Mr Barton) for attending ns witness in G. Beamish’s case. The amount claimed was £ll 14s 7d. Council decided not to recognise the claim. REFUNDS.

Mr T. Nicholson waited on the Council with reference to claim for expenses on account of rates paid to J. Black, for which ho was sued. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Or Taylor, “ That Mr T. Nicholson be paid the mileage and solicitor’s costs in the case of the Council against himself.” An amendment was proposed by Cr Bridge, seconded by Cr O'Snllivan and carried, “That Mr Nicholson’s claim be referred to Mr Black with an explanation of the circumstances.”

The following wore also carried : “ That a refund of £1 8s 8d be made to Mr James Aiken, being amount over-

paid on bis cheque for rates, dated Sept. 15, 1883.”

“ That a refund bo made to Mr A. Hunter, on account of rates paid in error, and that the amount be churned from Hearn and Kennedy as per rate book.” “ That Mr G. Gone bo allowed 3 days travelling expenses on account of licensing business at Iss per diem.” OI.D MANAWAPOU IJIUDOK. With regard to tho old bridge, it was resolved to offer the structure for sale by tender, provided tho Hawera Council will agree. FINANCIAL. The statement of receipts and expenditure was laid before the Council, showing the debit balance at the bank to be £SOG Os 2d. Accounts passed for payment; Day

labour, £l9 10s 01; E. L Barton, £5 14s 5I ; Patea Mail , £2 9s Od ; Murphy and Korisk, £5. IMMIO RATION 15ARRACKS. It was decided to, ask the Government to relieve the Council from the control of the late Immigration Barracks. NOTICES OF MOTION. By Or Wilson—That at the next meeting of the Patea Comity Council, a special order 'be made dissolving the Wairoa Highway Board. By Cr O'Sullivan—That the resolution passed last meeting relative to the Hospital grant be rescinded. The Council then adjourned.
