LONDON, Sept 28.
A rumour is current hero that Mr Charles Parnell has been shot,. The report, the origin of which has not been traced, cau°ed some excitement, but has not gained much credence. Liter. It has been ascertained that the report that Mr Parnell had been shot is altogether unfounded. The Rev Mr Shaw was accorded a public reception at Exeter Hall, on his return from Madagascar. There was a very large attendance of sympathisers and the general public. Mr Shaw gave a lengthy narrative of the treatment he received at the hands of the French naval authorities, showing that he had been subject to considerable illusage on shore and on board the warship which took him .to Reunion. The London press are unanimous in urging Mr Shaw to demand from the French Government reparation for the treatment received. The meetings at Dungannon yesterday were largely attended by Mr Parnell’s followers, and notwithstanding the presence of a large number of Orangemen, nothing approaching the nature of a riot occurred,, the presence of strong bodies of constabulary and military having been sufficent to preserve order. Sept 29. News is to hand of a fatal agrarian outrage in Ireland, the victim being a landlord in Mayo named Grotty. No clue' to the perpetrator of the murder has been obtained. O’Donnell was again brought up at Bow street Police Court to-day. Mrs Carey gave evidence of the murder, and testified that O’Donnell, after he had committed the deed, stated that he had been sent out to assassinate Carey. , CONSTANTINOPLE, Sept 27. Telegrams to hand from Sofia state that large numbers of arms are being imported into Bulgaria. The arm§ aro declared to be of Russian manufacture, and it is rumored that the Russian Government is cognisant of the movement. PARIS, Sept 27. It is reported that the Chinese Envoy has definitely declined the French proposals fdr the settlement of the Tonquin difficulty. Great secrecy is, however, observed regarding the progress of the and no official announcement has yet been made.
