There is a rumour current here that the Chinese Ambassador, the Marquis Tseng, has assumed an unyielding position in his negotiation with the French Government for cessation of hostilities in Tonquin, and evinces no desire to arrive at,an amicable settlement of the difficulty. The 1 French Press strongly denounces the arrogance and pretensions of the Celestial Government,' and urges further reinforcement of the French force in Tonquin and prosecution bf the war with full vigor. CAPETOWN, Sept, 24. Intelligence has been received from Transvaal that the native chiefs Mapoch and Marapcher, leaders of the rebellion against the Boers in the early part of this year, who were subsequently made prisoners, have been tried at Praslona, and sentenced to death.

At a meeting held at Ballarat on Saturday evening, resolutions strongly supporting' the annexation of the Pacific Islands were passed. BRISBANE, Sept 24. It is announced that the Government has concluded arrangements with the Orient Steamship .Company for the conveyance of mails between London and this colony, on the same terms as the agreement recently made with the Company by the New South Wales Government.
