DESTRUCTIVE EIRE AT AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, This day. A destructive fire broke out on Saturday night at Me Allen’s drapery store, Victoria street, which was totally destroyed, as were also the premises of Mr Williams*, tailor. The following, buildings were also partly damaged Atkinson, jeweller, and Cahill’s, draper^; Allen’s stock and furniture were insured for £550 in the Colonial, £250 being re-insured in the Phceuix Office. Williams’ buildings and stock were insured for £ISOO in the Norwich Union, two-thirds re-insured ; Atkinson, , £250 in the New Zealand, and Cahill!£2OO on furniture in the Colonial, and ■ £4OO on stock in the North Goods were largely saved from all shops except Allen’s. Atkinson’s and Cahill’s shops belonged to Mr J. W, James, contractor, and the insurance is unknown, as : the owner resides in the country. The fire was. accidental. A candle on the counter fired some muslin curtains in the shop - while Allen was turning off the gas at the meter. •
