AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
A committee meeting of the above Association was held at the Farmers Club room, on Saturday afternoon last. About a dozen gentlemen were present, the president, Mr John Shield, being in the chair.
The following gentlemen wrote, resigning their membership on the Association ; Messrs G. F. Bayly, E, Buckrell, Moore Hunter, and F. M. Chapman. The resignations were accepted, subject to the payment of arrears, if any.
A letter was read from Mr J. O’Sullivan, making application to take a lease for 10 years of a paddock at Kakaramea, now held by Mr R. E. Mcßae, and offering to pay £ls a year for the same, and to give up possession at a reasonable notice. Mr Mcßae also wrote, asking for a transfer to Mr O’Sullivan. After a short discussion it was resolved to accept Mr O’Sullivan’s offer subject to certain conditions imposed by the Society. The Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company wrote asking the date of the forthcoming show, at which they intended to exhibit..
Mr Honeyfield proposed that the show should be held on the Bth November, the day before the Waverley races, which was agreed to. Mr Ross suggested the striking out of rule No. 14, which set forth that not more than 3 exhibits could be shown in any one class. He thought the more exhibits they had the more revenue it meant. He would move that rale No. 14 be expunged. Mr Gower seconded. The Chairman and Mr Fleming thought three exhibits quite enough in one class, while Mr Gower thought that in the present state of the Society they should allow as many entries as they could get. The resolution was then put and carried.
Mr Fleming suggested that in order to encourage the better breeding of female stock, they should offer a prize for the best pen of heifers, but the matter was allowed to drop. • A resolution proposed by Mr Balmfortb, “ That there be a class for fat lambs of any breeding, three to be shown,” was seconded by Mr Fleming, and carried.
Mr Ross| moved to the effect that there be two classes for yearling calves, bnt after a desultory discussion the motion was withdrawn. Mr Hamilton proposed, “ That the pen of fat sheep be ten,” but Mr Fleming proposed as an amendment, that the number be five. The original resolution was withdrawn, and the amendment carried. The election of judges was then proceeded with as follows : Blood Horses—Messrs Hately, D. Scott, and J. Stephen. Draught Horses—Messrs J Stephenson, W Todd, and J Mitchell. Cattle—Messrs I) Fraser, J W Baker, J Elliot. Sheep—Messrs A Morrison, J Morgan, D Blair. Pigs—Mr D McGregor. Dogs—Mr J Sheild. Produce—-Messrs R Whittem and F J Jones. Draught Horses—Messrs J Ginger and D Fleming, Cattle—Messrs Gower and Syraes. Sheep—Messrs Bright and Morgan. Produce—Messrs Adams and Taplin. and Implements—Mr J Whis- "* haw. With reference to the overdraft of £72 at the Bank, the Secretary stated that lie had been asked by Mr Christie to have a promissory note payable either ‘ J on demand ” or at G months
drawn op. The Secretary-suggested making the amount £BO, in order to pay off several small accounts. This was done, and the meeting adjourned.
