(Star.) A correspondent who travels a great deat up and down this coast makes a comparison between the cost of a journey from Hawera to Wellington overland and the same trip by the Union S S. Company’s boats via New Plymouth. He points but that the fare by the latter method of travelling is, first class, £4 from New Plymouth to Wellington, to which add 8s for the railway—total, £4 Bs, to which must be also added the surf-boat charges. Overland the fare would be—

If a steamer could be caught at Patea, the cost would be even lees, and our correspondent contends that the' saving; in time as well as in money is considerable by avoiding the Union Steamship Company’s boats. His contention therefore is that the steam companies running to Wanganui and Patea should take every step, both by advertising in the papers and by posting up the movements of the'steamers at the Patea ’railway station, to inform the public of how connection between the trains and boats may bo secured. The suggestion certainly appears to be worthy of acloptioq.
In reply to a memorial by local manufacturers, asking that all Government work possible to bo done in the colony should be contracted for within the colony, the Premier has replied to the effect that he quite agrees with them, and, in fact, thinks ‘.he local manufacturers should have the preference.
