MiscellaneousMAYORAL ELECTION. To The Burgesses of Pates. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,fl J The unexpected resignation of Mi Milroy of the office of Mayor has led tc an election at an earlier date than was anticipated. I had intended to have contested the next election in the ordinary course, and therefore when the present vacancy arose and some friends asked me to be nominated I willingly agreed, as it has always been my pleasure to give my services to the public in any capacity in which they might be of use. My name has been associated with Patea for the past fifteen years, and j during that time I have, endeavoured to the best of my ability to advance the interests of the town. Leaving private institutions—such as the Steam Company—out of the question, I hare had the honour of being connected with the Town Board since its fonhation ih 1875, and subsequently with ,the Borough Council to the present time. I have also held office in the Harbour Board, the Domain Board, and in the Cemetery Board, the two latter of which T may say I took r. leading part in obtaining the establishment of. There arc various other movements with which I have been associated from time to time, and I feel that the confidence and consideration always kindly extended to hie by the public justify mo in asking a renewal on this occasion. If elected I. shall endeavour by every moans in my power to aid the Conned in ‘ho improvement of tlio Borough, and the carrying out of such works a» may be considered for the benefit of the place. 1 may add that if yon honour me with your confidence by. electing me Mayor my, watchword will be “ iProgfcss/ViidlAsCbstfnction;’’ ; ; Once more soliciting the favour of yonr vote, il havedhojvononr to remain,. Your obedient servant, ■J ; . SAMUEL JTAPLIN.V POLLING DAY, WEDNESDAY , SEPTEMBER 5. To the Ratepayers, Bdfbugh of I Patea. 1 T ADIES AND | j Having been requested by a largo number of ratepayers '^' offer myself for the ofifice. of; Mayor,’ it affords mo, great pleasure to accede to the request. My having been unanimously elected to the office pf Mayor by the Borough Council, affords the best guarantee that I possess the confidence of that body, the harmonious working of which is essential to the progress of the town. Of the manner in which I discharged my past public duties, and of the principles by which my conduct was regulated, it is not for me to speak. lin ay be said to hate lived in yonr interest, and my conduct and actions have been open to yon all. I have had many a hard battle to fight in the interest of the Harbour and Borough, but I am fully compensated by the satisfaction of knowing that in general my efforts have been honoured with yonr approbation. I can say that I have never been remarkable for bold, active, and sanguine pursuits of advantages that ar Qpersonal to myself.\ but have considered every question with impartiality, fidelity and freedom,, supporting or otherwise as my judgment prescribed. I am fully sensible of the necessity ,for ! the exercise of great care in the future administration of the Borough, and believe that by careful management this town will become one of the most flourishing on the coast. Should you do me the honour to elect me to the office I now seek, I will use every effort and care to promote iyonr interest and welfare in which my •own is so intimately bomvl.
