SELFISH ENJOYMENT.

Our, New -Plymouth contemporary is exercised in mind and pen because no invitations to the railway opening were sent to the Taranaki magnates. Our friend charges ns with a lack of hospitality and a want of manners as well. He says-—“ We have not hoard of a single complimentary invitation as having been sent to Now Plymouth, nbr has any attempt been made to arrange the trains so that persons from Taranaki who might wish to congratulate the Patoa seniors on the exiension of the lino to their district, would he able to attend without losing three days of the week over'the affair. The uniting of towns-by the iron road is a matter for general rejoicing, and wc should have imagined onr neighbours at Patea would have ’thofiglit so too; hut it appears from the' indifference shown to the people in this part of the district they have no desire to see any Taranaki representatives amongst them. We presume therefore they will indulge in their enjoy ments in the selfish style which bespeaks an inhospitable community.” We really had no idea that there were “ persons ” in Taranaki who had any desire to congratulate Patea settlers upon anything; If such there are,’we hope they will accept profuse apologies for any omissions. Explanations of the cause will be found in Mr Sherwood's speech, which, no doubt, the Herald will bo glad to publish. The presumption that we should indulge in our enjoyments “in the selfish style which bespeaks an inhospitable comunity” was fairly correct. We did enjoy ourselves, the only thing wanted being the presence of those Taranaki “persons” who desired to congratulate settlers hero. No doubt the Committee were much to blame for not inviting the Auckland, Wellington, and. Dunedin people, as the occasion was one for “general rejoicing,” but th Herald has taught them a lesson in manners, and they will throw the “ selfish style”, overboard at the first opportunity; Meanwhile we are delighted .to learn of. the new-born interest of New Plymouth people in the welfare of Patea. We had not thought them capable of it. ' ,
