PUBLIC MEETING AT HAWERA

Oil Friday evening a public meeting was held to consider Railway matters. It was decided to urge the Government to push on the completion of the line between Hawera and Mamitaln, as fast as possible, the work to be commenced at the Hawera end. No doubt it would facilitate-the completion of the line if such were done, and we hope the Government will pay attention to the request of the Hawera people. In seconding Mr Jones’s motion for a public holiday on Tuesday, Mr King said he thought they might well join in celebrating the opening of the hne fiom Wanganui to Pafea ; and the fact of Pa tea inviting the Mayor and Council of Hawera should be quite enough o. persuade them to reciprocate by proclaiming a .public holiday, and so induce a better feeling between Haweia and Patea. We can assure Mr King that the desire of the Patea people is to work with Hawera, and to see Hawera working with them in return. The interests of the two places.are identical, and any movement which benefits one pljice must re-act the other. The completion of the railway will go a long way towards bringing about a healthy state of feelmg between the two towns, and we believe people here are just as anxious for the gap to be bridged as are our northern friends.
