POLLED ANGUS CATTLE.
Tho Wakatipu on her July tiip from Sydney had on board a Mr Hogarth, from Queensland, who came over to New Zealand purposely to look for polled Angus cattle. It happened that Mr Hogarth was so pleased with the Totara herd that he selected a young bull and heifer, paying; tho high figure of 240 guineas for the pair. It appears that the young strangers made a favourable impression on the other side, as, immediately on arrival, Mr Hogarth cabled the . New Zealand and Australian Land Co. to send him oyer another j'oung bull of the same class, and the animal was dispatched by the, Wakatipu from Lyttelton on Monday last. Polled Angus cattle now are attracting considerable attention in Australia, whence tho company receive numerous enquiries, and arc receiving orders from Victoria as well as New South Wales, and Queensland. These .cattle are in great demand in America, which is doubtless due to the advantages they possess over homed cattle for sending long distances by rail or steamer, and to the ;evenness with which they lay on flesh, and for their hardihood. The Totara : 'Polled Angus herd has only been in the Oamaru district for about a year, having been removed from Edendale, where it was originated about.2o years ago ; and it now comprises some 50 head of pure-bred females, with, a couple of imported bulls.— N.O.
