PUBLIC MEETING AT WAVERLEY
The adjourned meeting re railway siding on the Waverley Racecourse was held on Saturday evening in the old Town Hall, Mr John Hair, Chairman of the first meeting, presiding. The Chairman opened the proceedings by explaining the object of the meeting, and the reason of the first meeting being adjourned. Mr D. Fleming then read some correspondencej from the Public Works Office stating that the Government had hitherto refused the siding on the ground of expense, and moved the following resolution which was seconded by Mr Walter Symes and carried, “ That this. meeting is of opinion that the Public Works Department? is totally ignorant of the locality and requirements regarding railway accomodation at the so called Whenuakura Railway Station it being unsuitable to settlers, and that unless they are granted a siding at the Waverley racecourse they will not be able to avail themselves of the benefit of the railway until they reach either Patea or Waverley, and that Mr Hutchison bo requested to bring a motion before Parliament to grant a siding, the Public Works Department having refused, on the ground that it would be too near Waverley, and expenses too heavy according to their estimate, namely £I6OO, but that the meeting is confident a small siding can be done for about £IOO, grade on line where indicated being considered about 1 in 200. It was then resolved that the Chairman forward the above resolution to Mr Hutchison, M.H.R., with a letter asking him to bring the matter before Parliament. The meeting then terminated.
