SIR, —In reply to a letter which appeared in your journal last night, signed by one James Hansen, I wish to make the following statement in explanation of the unfortunate part I have unwittingly been led into taking in this matter. Some time since I saw Mr David Anderson at his house, and, in course of conversation, ho made the statements imputed to mo in Mr Hansen’s letter of last evening, and referred me lo Mr Hansen himself for a corroboration of the truth. Those statements wore made by Anderson to me in presence of three witnesses, whom I can produce to any person taking sufficient interest in the matter to inquire, and since the occasion I now refer to, Anderson has more than once reiterated the accusations. I, thinking the statements true, did repeat them in part to two or three persons in the street at Kakaramea, near the hotel, but not at the hotel. I say, as I have said before that I did not fabricate the statements, but only repeated publicly what I had heard publicly, and not with any wish or intention of injuring Mr Hanson. Beyond my informant I have no authority in this matter, and I am exceedingly sorry that I have been led into an unpleasant piece of business innocently. . The public can, if they wish, veiify my statements.—-Yours truly, John McKenzie. Patea, August 16.
