THE S.S. NAPIER IN A GALE.
(feu press association.) GREYMOUTH, August 15. The steamer Napier, which has been outside during the late bad weather, came in over a rough bar this afternoon, having little coal in her bunkers, and little food, and all her cattle gone. Captain Fi-k reports leaving Patea on Thursday. He encountered a heavy gale to Cape Farewell, and put into Nelson, where sixty sheep on deck were sold > Left on Friday, all the cattle being well. Weather good to Cape Foulwind, but bad weather from there to the bar. A terrific gale was experienced on Monday night. Three bullocks were thrown overboard on Sunday night, and on Monday night four more. Seas became so heavy, and the vessel shipped so much water, that the captain deemed it advisable for the protection of life and property to close the ha ! ches, to prevent the vessel foundering.- The remaining cattle soon died. It rained incessantly and heavily the whole time.
