HAWERA MERCANTILE UNION.
The Stav reports that the meeting on Tuesday was one of the most important yet held. Some time since the Union recommended the Patoa Steam Shipping Company to reduce the rate of freight inwards from 20s to 15a. The company declined to do this. The Union again warned and advised the company against the folly of shutting out trade from Patea, Mr Cowcrn, agent for the .Napier, by arrangements made on Saturday last, interviewed the Union, offering to keep fiat boat; in (he running at 15s. As Mr Cowcrn had been the first to meet the wishes of the Union, (he preference will be given to the Napier. Mr Cowcrn, during (he interview expressed a desire that the two placcst Hawcra and Patea, should work together for mutual benefit, and said he would spare no pains as agent at Patea in the interests of shippers in Ibis district. Thanking the Union for their cordial interview, Mr Cowcrn retired.
On opening the correspondence a letter was road from Mr Horner, manager of the Patea S,S. Company, stating that the company would carry freight inwards, per Wavcrley, at the rate of 15s per ton,—The sceretaiy was instructed to acknowledge the letter.
