FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT.
FOUR LIVES LOST. J_PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NELSON, August 14. The Pilot’s boat went out at three this morning to * (he steamer Wanaka, and when returning capsized. All the crew were lost. Pilot Low is safe. Latest Particulars. Further particulars have transpired of the dreadful catastrophe this morning, by which four of the pilot crew were drowned. It appears that the steamer Wanaka came down to the anchorage about four o’clock when it was so intensely dark that it was impossible to see any distance. In spite of a heavy gale and high sea the boat put off and reached the steamer safely, putting the pilot, Captain Low, on board. The boat left, and directly she got away a by-sea came along, and immediately afterwards the ship’s officer beard the men cry out “ We are all right, but our oars are gone.” It was too dark to see anything, but at daylight (he boat was found on the beach bottom up. Search parlies are out for the bodies.'
