MOMOHAKI ROADS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Permit me through your valuable columns to draw the attention of the Wairoa Highway Board, to what I consicer the very loose way that the roads on the Momohaki block are laid off by the Foreman to the Board. I allude particularly to the one on which the contractors, Davis and Hughes, are at work. It is usual, I believe, where roads have to be made on sidelings to put in level or grade pegs to guide the contractor, but I find nothing of the sort is done on this particular work, but it is left to the contractors judgment to do the best he can by beginning at a certain point and carrying it out at a certain point. It this work had been what I may term graded or levels taken and properly pegged off upon a uniform plan, at one part of it an improvement of at least six feet could be effected. My object here is not in any way to find fault with the contractors, but to show the very loose way in which this contract is being done, giving no satisfaction to the ratepayers, who have to pay extra sums besides the rates, and then to see the work so slovenly done by the Board and its officials.—l am, &c. Ratepayer. Momahaki, August Bth, 1883.
