WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB.

Tlio annual meeting of the above Club look place on Monday evening, Dr Earle in l.lio chair. The (innnal report Muted that the ’Arrangements entered Into with Messrs Hill and Toole for the use of their lotalisator had been carried out satisfactorily by I hem. Mr Mutely, the hamlicapper of the Club, bad sent in bis resignation, which had been accepted. In order to reduce the overdraft the Cominittteo suggested some slight reduction in the value of the stakes. The nomination of Derby candidates for 188(> being so small—eleven —it would bo advisable to consider whether an alteration of the condition of entry,'viz., by making it eligible for yearlings instead of foals would not considerably increase the number of entries. On I)r Earle’s moving the adoption of tho report Dr Connolly deprecated (he reduction of the slakes, pointing out that owners of horses had in reality contributed fully half of the stakes in entries and subscriptions.

Mr Paul agreed with Dr Connolly with regard to the reduction of the stakes, and supported the suggestion of the Committee contained in the report, that the Derby should be eligible for yearlings, instead of foals, as did also Mr Pollock. The following officers were elected.— Mr W. T, Owen, Judge ; Mr Alex. Higgle, starter ; Mr John Higgle, clerk of the course; Mr Joseph Abbot, clerk of the scales; Mr S.‘H. Drew, timekeeper ; Mr P. R. Jackson, secretary and treasurer; and Mr J. O. Evett, handicapper. The following gentlemen were elected stewards, viz., Drs Earle and Connolly, and Messrs J. G. Wilson, H. N. Harrison, William Wilson, J. P. Watt, and Thomas Thatcher. Dr Earle, Dr Connolly, and Messrs H. N. Harrison, Thomas Thatcher, J. Abbot, C. S. Cross, J. Paul, J. p. Watt, A] Higgie, J. G, Wilson, and W. Wilson, were elected the committee for the ensuing year. After some discussion it was decided to give Mr Hately the sum of £75 in recognition of his services rendered to the Club. Mr Pollock suggested the desirability of adding a weight for age race to the autumn meeting. Dr Connolly supported the proposition which the committee were recommended to consider, together with the desirability of abolishing the qualification fee for owners. Messrs T. Messiter, S. Powell, J. Creswell and J. Lethbridge were proposed as new members, to he balloted for at the next general meeting. Other routine business was transacted and the meeting then adjourned.
