The Deputy Master of the Mint notes the remarkable fact that, with the exception of a small number of 100-franc pieces, no gold whatever was coined at the Paris Mint during the whole of last year, and that there has been no coinage of French gold pieces for general circulation since 1879. , ' The continued disappearance of the sardines from the coast of Brittany has become a serious calamity to the people of that part, where the catching has been wont to give employment to 1500 boats and more than 9000 fishermen, while the curing and packing for home consumption and exportation have furnished a living to a very large number of male and female hands. Recent observations show that some parts of Greenland are slowly sinking.
