WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly elected Board for the Wairoa Highway District was held on Saturday, 21st inst, at Mr Fookes’ office. Present Messrs J Aiken, G Johnston, W Symes, John Ton and William Wilson. The first business was the election of a Chairman, and Mr John lon, the Chairman of the old Board, was again elected to the position. The Treasurer’s balance was, General Account, £l6B 18s 7d j Block VIII, £9B 4s 7cl ; Block IX, Dr, £4‘ 13s 6d ; Block 111, Cr. £l4 18s 6d ; Block IV, Omahine, £8 7s lOd. REPORT. The Foreman of. Works sent in his report, saying that Davis and Hughes were progressing satisfactorily with the Motuwhero Road. J Hughes had all the timber on the ground for the Motuwhero Bridge, and had commenced driving the piles. Repairs had been done on Aiken and Bradley’s road, and culverts put in where required. Repairs had been done on various;roads during the month by the day men. Slips had been removed off the Momohaki Road to Block VIII, S Irwin had finished the Moturoa contract. The road from Waitotara to the Railway Station was badly in want of a few loads of shell. Mr Mason had declined the 1200 feet of timber for culverts that had been Harris road had been examined, and several slips were on the side entry. CORRESPONDENCE. From Under-Secretary to Mr Fookes, Returning Officer, stating that the members of the Board were duly gazetted. From Surveyor-General, stating that the Government would form the two miles of road at northern end of Moturoa road, also the road from section 41 block 111, to southwards to section 7, and that the Crown Lands Ranger had been instructed accordingly ; also stating that the Government could not assist in the construction of the road to Richardson’s via Sarigaters,. as it would not be of value to the Government in opening Crown Lands ; also stating that a progress payment of £l5O for Motuwhero Road had been passed. From Commissioner of Crown Lands, Patea, that £2O had been passed for Block IX. Z. From Public Works Office, Wellington, re proclamation asking for duplicate plans. Also inquiring if the total work of estimate for Henson’s Eoad, under Roads and Bridges Construction Act, was required. From Public Trustee re compensation for land taken from MrCoghill’s property. _ Fgpm R Garrett/that plans and estimate Road had been duly forwarded to Wellington. From Mr Lind re petition of Momahaki settlers, and requesting-tbe Board to form a portion of the road between the bush at Williamson’s gate and Richardson. From Treasury—That £l5O had been forwarded on account of road to block IV, and £2O on account of block IX.

From Palea County Council, acknowledging receipt of letter re division of District, and that Mr W, Wilson had been appointed to No. 2 Ward. Petition from D. Williamson and settlers on Blocks VIII and IX, requesting the Board to form a portion of the road leading to Blocks YIII and IX. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment —S. Irwin, £l7 17s 6d ; J. Belling, £2 16a ; J. B. Taylor, £l4 19s 4d ; H. F. Mason, £6Blßs ;J. Hughes, £2 10s ; G. Boss, £7 7s ; H. F. Mason, £lO 12s ; Patea Mail , £5 6s 3d ; E. G. Ross, £9 3s 6d, RESOLUTIONS. Resolved “ That Mr Williamson’s application stand over till next meeting, and that Messrs Johnston and Symes report on same at next meeting.” Resolved “That the Secretary write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands requesting that a right of road through Section 2, Block 8, be reserved.” Resolved “ That the full amount of Mr Garrett’s estimate for Henson’s road be applied for.” It was proposed “ That the resolution passed at the annual meeting of ratepayers of the Wairoa Highway District re the Okotnkn road be adopted as a resolution of the Wairoa Highway Board. Lost. .The following amendment was carried, the matter of the Okotuku Road flfafttLpver til! next meeting.” iliiblved—“ That the foreman of works get necessary repairs done on Waitotara road, provided cost does not exceed £5, but that tenders be called for if cost exceeds that amount.” Resolved—“ That the foreman of works

inspect the lower Kohi bridge and report at next meeting, with cost of estimate of repairs, and have slip on Taylor’s Hill shifted, provided cost does not exceed £5, but that tenders be called for if cost exceeds that amount. Resolved—“ That Mr Fookes continue to act as secretary, treasurer and collector to the Board as formerly.” Resolved—“ That Mr Thurston continue as Foreman of Works as formerly. Resolved—“ That the meetings of the Board be held on the second Saturday in each month at 2 p m. The meeting then adjourned.
