FIRE BELL RINGING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,-—ln reply to “ Observer ”in your last .issue, and from enquiries I have since made, I think the Sergeant of Police was much to blame for abusing and threatening those who rang the bell so promptly at the last fire alarm. It is certainly the duty of the police or any other persons on hearing an alarm of fire (whether it turns out false or not) to at once ring the bell to enable the Brigade to turn out promptly and in force to do the best they can, and the police have no right to interfere until making the proper inquiries. From au inspection which I have made I think the recent alarm was quite a sufficient cause for ringing the fire bell. I regret X was not in town ; if I had been, the Sergeant would no doubt not have been so hasty in accusing the Brigade of perpetrating a hoax on the public. Hoping always to find the Brigade _so smart in turning out and thanking yon for inserting this.—l am, &c., William Dixon, Fire Inspector.
