SYDNEY TAIWHANGA'S PETITION.
“ Go forth, 0 our messenger, on the soft airs of affection, to remote lands, across the ocean that was trodden by Tawhaki (the godman of Maori mythology), to Victoria the Queen of England, whose fame for graciousness has extended to all the kingdoms of the world, including New Zealand.” This was the manner of greeting the Queen in the Maori petition lately presented by those selfappointed deputies who went to London, and came back at other people’s expense. We now learn from a paper just presented to Parliament, that the Colonial Secretary in London referred the petition back to Ministers in Wellington, and that after their explanatory comments, Earl Derby sent a ■ final answer to the Maori deputies that “ he had been unable to advise Her Majesty to give any direction for a compliance with the prayer oi the memorialists.”
