THE HOSPITAL
We learn that the Government has decided that no more patients are to be admitted into the Patea Hospital, and that that institution is shortly to be closed. It is hoped that this fact will be noticed at Hawera, Waverley and other neighbouring districts, and that no. patients will be sent in, as they cannot now be admitted. It is recommended that any accident or other cases demanding hospital care and treatment should be sent either to Wanganui or New Plymouth. The maintenance of the sick poor of this district has long been defrayed by the Government, without any adequate or real local assistance, and it is not extraordinary that this arrangement cannot be continued. Patients in Wanganui or New Plymouth hospital will have to be supported by the districts from which they may be sent, and any hospital will be glad to receive them as the Government pays half the cost of maintaining charitable institutions, and the expenditure is, of course, a benefit to the district where it disbursed.
