This morning a group of hands employed Jn an establishment in town might have been noticed standing round a well and eagerly poring into its depths. It has since been ascertained that the object of their solicitations was a .small dog, wMch, in some inexplicable manner had fallen down the well. After a lapse of some fifteen minutes; the canine was recovered, and us it was not quite defunct then, it has been considered unnecessary to hold an inquest. It cannot be said that a good glazed pipe cannot be produced on the Coast, There is now on view at this office a sample turned out by. Mr Jas. Smith, 5 and an excellent specimen it appears to be. The experimental stage may be said to- have passed, and we may soon hope to hear of Patea pipes making a name for themselves. Mr Sherwood’s factory is nowi* l working order and manufacturing will commence this week. These, works are likely to do a good deal. for the district in bringing it prominently forward outside. A correspondent asks the Post ;l if the San Francisco mail steamers which used to visit Wellingn, and now call monthly at Auckland are not as large as the lonic ?” To those who remember the San Francisco boats when they used to come alongside Queen’s Wharf every month some years back this will'seem ajvery absurd . question, the difference in size: being so marked. We may state, however, for general information, that the lonic is nearly half as large again as the City of Sydney or City of New York, and nearly twice the size of the-Australia or Zealandia, The respective gross tonnages are as follows : —Australia and Zealandia, 2774 tons; City of Sydney iand City of New York, 3019 tons ; lonic, 43G8 tons. The net tonnages are—Australia and Zealandia, 1715 tons ; City of New York land City of Sydney, about 1990 tons ; lonic 3070 tons.
