FIRE IN EGMONT STREET.
NARROW ESCAPE. A narrow escape from> a destructive fire occurred early yesterday morning, the scene being the premises of Messrs Lundberg and Co„ Egmont street. From what we can gather the circumstances were these : Mr Lnndberg, Mr Mooney and a youth named Blandford slept in the upper storey of the building, and were aroused at about £ quarter to 2 yesterday morning by a strong smell of smoke. On opening the door of their sleeping apartment, which leads in to the main room, the latter appeared to be on fire, near the front window. Blandford was dispatched at once to ring the bell, and ‘Messrs Lnndberg and; Mooney with considerable presence of mind got buckets of water -and kept the fire in check as well as they could until the arrival of the brigade. The latter were unusually prompt in answering the alarm and assisted by erne or two early comers soon had a hydrant playing, on the flames, which were quickly subdued. It is matter for congratulation that the' efforts of the Brigade were so successful, because, if Mahony and Co.’s place had caught, nearly the whole side of the street must have, been swept away. Lnndberg and Co. will be considerable losers by this unfortunate mishap, which at present is quite unaccounted for. < Amongst articles destroyed was a handsome drawing-room suite, valued at 45 : guineas ; while the general stock' lias been'. much damaged. by water. The insurances on the stock and £450 r in the building, the former in the Colonial and the latter in the North British. Abont £2O will cover the damage to the building, but Mr Lundberg estimates his loss upon stock, which was valued at £2OO, at considerably above the amount of the insurance.
