XJocler * the heading of *Oog tt. Sheep,' the. Lyttelton Times furnishes the following : “ A man;;living."near Babbit island on the Waimakariri Conservator's’ reserves, keeps a dog which is evidently no common animal. His bark is|so terrific that sheep cannot come within 200 yards of him, even though he is chained up. He commands the country for a radius of ten chains from his kennel, and no. sheep dare venture inside this magic circle. : Probably the howls of this dog would never have reached the public ear were it not for the fact that the surrounding reserves are leased from the Board of Conservators by another man for the express purpose of running sheep on them. ■ He was .to have , free and undisturbed possession for his sheep to graze in peace, but the dog has ousted the timid animals from something like 31 acres, more or less. They can only gaze, at the [ grass growing taller and more inviting day by day, but the awful the.‘-dog-fiehd ’ keeps them l back imore effectually; than a five-wife fenced The sheepowner has taken constitutional measures against the dog owner, and has i petitioned the Board of Conservators, of which both parties are tenents, to take measures to stop the oversupply of bark.”
