A MOURNFUL EVENT.

Our London telegrams to-day convey the intelligence, of one of the most distressing events which we have ever heard of. Some two thousand children had been attending a fete at Sunderland, and as they were leaving the Hall, bright and happy no doubt with their evening’s enjoyment, theory of “ Fire !” was foolishly raised. The consequences were terrible. The staircase became _hlpck_ed, and a scene harrowing to the imagination ensued; When order was restored, it was found that a hundred and eighty little ones had been killed in the frantic rush to escape from the building, and many others injured. Such a sad ending to a festive gathering is seldom recorded ; and far away as we are from the scene of the disaster, there are warm hearts here that will throb with sympathy for the mothers whose homes have been desolated.
