REPORTED ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP SALISBURY CATHEDRAL.
The city of Salisbury was thrown into a state of considerable alarm oh April 18 by the report of an attempt to blow up the cathedral.; It appears that about 11 o’clock the previous evening a policeman, on passing a few yards from the Lady Chapel, found a long wooden box, securely bound with sheet iron, and tied with a .string,.. The box was immediately conveyed to the police station, when it was discovered, that there was a slit in it, from which extended a small slip of paper for ignition. 1 The box contained a. bag of whitish powder, and a grain of this being experimented upon, immediately exploded, making a slight hissing noise. A part of the explosive has been carefully examined by Captain George, who understands these substances, and he and the police have not the least doubt of its being of the, nature of dynamite. The exact size of the box is. 14 inches by ,10J inches. The strip of paper in the aperture of the box had, been dipped in liquid, so as to be easily inflammable. The box being near the wall of the Lady Chapel, was in the vicinity of the spire itself, and it is held that the object was to blow down the latter..
