COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the special Imeeting of the County Council on Wednesday', afterthe adjournment at one o’clock, the subject of the new highway district was resumed, and Or Wilson moved, “ That the following special order be made giving name, ■ boundaries, number of subdivisions and boundaries of such subdivisions, ins. Name—The Whenuakura-Waitotara Highway District. Boundary—From the sea to the Whenuakura Bridge, thence along main road to the Waitotara township, round township to river Waitotara, thence -by river to sea* then along sea to mouth of Whenuakura river.. Number of subdivisions shall be five , number of wardens five. Boundaries of subdivision No. 1— From sea to Whenuakura Bridge along main road to sec. 340, 229, 227, 272, 258, 257, 250, 254 to sea ; No. 2—By secs 339, 413, 241, 252 to sea ; No. 3—Round 338 along main road to 314 along. From sec. 408 to ; 302, Waitotara river to sea; No. s— From 313 to main road to Waitotara township, round township and river to 301.” Seconded by Cr Dune, and carried. ■ ... v 1 IMPOUNDING. BY-LAWS. , ; Cr Bridge moved, “ That a special order be • made amending Impounding by-law (Provincial district of Wellington) .by inserting after the word. ‘ small cattle 3d ’ (heading ‘lmpounding Fees ’) ‘ The above charges to be paid for each day or part of a day that the animal remains im pound. ’ ” He moved this because the by-laws in did not state whetner the impounding charges were for one day or for: the whole time any cattle were in the pound. The Resjdent. Magistrate at Wanganui had - recently decided that it applied to the whole time the animal was in the pound.: I£ that were the case they would be unable to get anyone to keep their pound, as it was not likely a person would take the pound and go to the expense of advertising, with only the chance of obtaining a shilling, besides maintenance fee for the whole time any animal was in the pound. Resolution carried. Ordinary Meeting. DEPUTATION. ‘ Mr Patterson waited on the Council with reference to the measuring and taking over of part of his contract, the breaking of metal at the Manawapou, as he wished to obtain some of the progress payments. In reply to Cr Foreman, Mr Patterson said the quantity of metal broken was about 300 yards. Mr Patterson said he liad asked the Engineer to inspect the metal, and he (Mr Patterson) thought he had gone up that day (Wednesday). The matter was then held over, in the event of the Engineer turning up and reporting as to the metal. COIUiESPONDENCE. Letters were read From Mr H. F. Mason, asking if the Council were willing to relinquish thecontrol of the Wavqrley Recreation Ground. Cr Bridge moved, “That the Council are willing to relinquish control of the Waverley Recreation Ground.” In moving the resolution, he stated that this land was handed over to the Council without their reauest. Mr Sherwood got the land vested in the Council without their consent. , Resolution seconded by Cr Howie and carried.

From Mr W. E. Lawson, secretary to the Taranaki County Council, stating that bodj r had in 1878 repaired the bridge across the Patea River on the Mountain road, which was in the then Patea County, and asking for a refund of half the amount of expenses which had been incurred. Cr Wilson was of opinion that the Taranaki Council had applied to, the wrong body. Hawera Council was the one which was concerned. A slight discussion took place between Councillors as to whether the Patea Council were liable or not, and it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Wilson seconded by Cr Bridge, “That Taranaki County Council be informed that the claim for- repairs to the upper Patea bridge is considered by this Council to bo a liability, of the Hawera County Council in whose county the bridge stands.” Prom Mr S. W. Nicholls, - stating that he was charged with rales for a section he was never in possession of; : also, that other rates he was charged had been paid, Gr Durie consented to interview Mr Nicholls on the subject of his rates.

ROAD METAL. , It-was resolved, on the motion of Cr Bridge, seconded by Cr Foreman—“ That the chairman take the necessary steps to put i some ,of flie broken metal on the approach to the Manawapou bridge.” VALUATION .LIST. ■ Cr Foreman proposed, Cr ,Bridge secondedj and it was carried—“ That the clerk write at once ,to Wellington, asking that the valuation, fist for The County be forwarded without delay,” clerk’s salary. The Clerk wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the fact that when it was resolved to appoint him, the salary was fixed at £BO, £SO to be charged, to general accounts, and £3O to Hospital. A discussion ensued, and ultimately the following was carried : Proposed by Cr Durie, iand seconded by Cr Morgan, “ That the Clerk’s appointment to the Council be continued, at a salary at the rate of £65 per annum.” Cr Wilson was in favour of continuing as at present (£80). Mr Horner then resumed the chair, not having voted. RESERVES. Resolved That the Manawapou reserve be advertised to be let for a terra of years by tender, reservingto the Council all necessary rights of re-letting for the use of the . Council or their servants.” • DOG TAX. It was resolved to notify the Collector to has'en the collection of the tax. The Council then adjourned.
