TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The exposure in your issue of Wednesday, re Major Atkinson’s acquaintance with the position of the claim made by the Patea Harbour Board for compensation for land taken' for railway purposes, is but one of in any cases now in the district. It is of no consequence to the Major (hat the Board has been at considerable exMase in obtaining the opinion of experts the pecuniary loss to the Board in respect of the land taken, and that individual members of The Board had taken great trouble by reason of the bait held out. This is a matter That, if I ■mistake' was first' Taken in .hand when Mr Sherwood was chairman,' but was stayed off.’ Then Mr Contes, as chairman, gave evidence in Wellington about the matter. Looks as if the Major thought, “ Ob, it answers them, and won’t hurt me, and saves me being pestered in other’ ways; It is a useful bait, and I can sir on it;, straight when it suits me.” The information which ,you .also furnish from official records further shows how little the .Major troubles to inform himself, of matters of vital interest to the district, about which he has been specially petitioned, if not promised support; The bowl-out by your article of aU he knows or cares about the harbour, so long as he. can keep in with election committee organisers, as witness the property tax ■appointments,- nud buu.v malTers~mentioned at the public meeting, ought to be borne in mind, and inquiry instituted in other directions.“l am, &c., Not. for the Major.
