It is announced that Chief Justice Wrenfordsley, has been created a Knight Bachelor, Tho nas Caffrey, one of the Phoenix Park murderers, was hanged at Dublin to-day. He confessed his guilt. Earl Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, in replying to a deputation of the Council of the Colonial Institute, which waited upon him to urge the annexation of New Guinea, stated that he was in favour of the annexation, and that the matter would be decided by the Cabinet as soon as Sir Arthur Kennedy’s despatches had been received. Any statement which had been circulated to the contrary, Lord Derby added, was purely imaginary. Sir Arthur Blyth, Agent-General for South Australia, and the Hon. Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New South Wales, spoke in favour of the annexation. Mr Thos Archer, the Queensland AgentGeneral, staled that his Government only desired the annexation of the nnclaimed portions of the Island. It is rumoured that the naval fleets in Chinese waters are about to be increased by the various powers. The report is, however, unconfirmed. The stock of Congous is 240,000 chests. The first cargo for Australia will not leave before four weeks after the opening of the season.
