Mr George Coppin the known lessee of tho Theatre Royal has orignatod a movement to improve" the 4l back slums” of Melbourne, and having purchased an acre of land, r is having plans prepared for the erection of 40 working men’s dwellings, after the 44 Peabody Improved Industrial Dwellings” for the working classes in London. Each dwelling will consist of four well-ventilated rooms, with oven, sink/ water, and every domestic conviencc for the tenants. The rent will be about 10s a week. A detached model lodging-house will also be erected, in which 300 beds wilL be' made up T at <6<3 for' : each lod%er 7 \yith the use of fire, and cooking utensils, lavatory, reading and smokingroom, &c. A large meeting-ball will also be connected with this establislnnenl. The cost of land and buildings is estimated at £25,000. Tenders will be invited immediately upon the completion of the working jplans, and the foundation-stone will be laid by the Right Worshipful the Mayor of Melbourne, at which time a limited liability company, will be formed to carrj* out the undertaking. As the present Model Lodging-house in West Melbourne is paying 10 per cent, dividend, with a handsome reserve fund, and the £lO shares are now selling at £l7 10s (says the Argus), there ought to be no difficulty in disposing of ; all tha shares when they are offered to the public, as the new company will combine philanthropy with good investment.
