A FIEND IN HUMAN FORM.
A woman named Elizabeth Roberts; was recently charged before the.Chester magistrates with attempting totnnrder her infant. Roberts, while under the influence of drink, seized' her infant,' which was’ jnst beginning to walk, and 'pitched it on the fire.' Elizabeth Antrobus, a neighbour, snatched : the child away from the flames,'but the prisoner struggled ' with heri >pd/ ; obtaining possession of her infant exclaimed; “I will finish you off 'now, ’’ and again flung it in. the grate. Antror bus recovered the child, and loudly screamed for he!p, but before assistance arrived the prisoner pitched ithe child into the fire a third time, and being frustrated in her endeavours to kill it in that way, she tried to fling a kettle of boiling water over it. The child was taken to the infirmatory, where its wounds wore dressecb ■ ■■“-•The’.’ worn an "%ag committed for trial, and was hissed by the women in Court sis she was led to the cells below.
