The promoters of the Frozen Meat and Storage Company have applied to the Harbour Board that Mr W E McDonald, its Engineer, be permitted to act as Engineer for its proposed reclamation works. The request was refused on the ground that the Engineer could not serve two masters. WELLINGTON, May 15. Mr W. C. Buchanan addressed his constituents last night, and received the usual complimentary votes. All the single women who arrived by the British Queen have been engaged at wages from 10s per week to £4O a year. The election of a member of the Harbour Board to replace Mr W. V. Jackson, the late chairman, who resigned, took place to-day, and resulted in Mr J. Duthie being elected by a majority of nearly two hundred. Mr Duthie, in returning thanks, expressed his opinion that the construction of a dock in the harbour was quite within the means of the Harbour Board, and that he hoped before long to be able to place before the Board a scheme for the purpose. CHRISTCHURCH, May 15. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s annual meeting was held to-day. The stakes paid were L667G. Last year they were L 4974. The Club’s liability to the bank has been reduced by L 3200. The totalisator realised L 2838. The receipts for the year were L 10,490, and the expenditure L 7699, and L6GI on account of the grand stand.
