A GIRL SENTENCED TO DEATH.
Milbra Nott was arraigned at Armidale, New South Wales, on the 10th inst., before Sir George Innes, for the murder of Eobert Bruce Mitchell, by stabbing him in Stannifer in October last. The jury brought in a verdict of “ Wilful murder,” with a strong recommendation to mercy, in which the Judge fully concurred, A most painful scene took place when the verdict was given. The prisoner who had wept during the whole trial, fell off the chair and went into hysterics, and had to be carried out of Court. In about ten minutes she was again brought into Coui’t and held up by policemen while the sentence was passed. The Judge said he would do all in his power to carry the jury’s recommendation into effect. Milbra Nott is an orphan, of about eighteen years of age. She is very good-looking, and was engaged to Mitchell. It was in consequence of his refusal to carry out his promise after making all arrangements that she stabbed him. The general impression was that the verdict would be one of manslaughter.
